2012 Breast Health Education Series Kicks Off on June 5

In partnership with local breast centers and other nonprofit organizations, we created a comprehensive Breast Health Education Series beginning in June through November to educate the community on various topics related to breast health and cancer awareness.

All sessions are free and open to the public and cover topics such as prevention, screening, diagnostics, treatment and survivorship.

The first session on June 5 will cover “Nutrition & Breast Health: The Power of Your Plate” presented by Karen Godinez, RD, CSO, Registered Oncology Dietitian at SJMC. During the course, Godinez will explain how to increase your awareness of the connection between nutrition and breast health. Find out if what you eat is as important as how much.

Also in June, we’ll present a course on “Cancer and Your Rights” by Laura Riley, Esq. where you can learn about health insurance and your employment rights with a cancer diagnosis.

For more information and to review the entire Breast Health Education Series schedule, please visit the Komen OC website.

We look forward to seeing you!

The 2012 Susan G. Komen Orange County Race for the Cure Registration is Now Open!

Registration is now open for the 2012 Susan G. Komen Orange County Race for the Cure, taking place at Fashion Island in Newport Beach on Saturday, Sept. 23. Every year, thousands of breast cancer survivors and supporters come together to participate in the 5K run and walk which raises funds to provide breast cancer treatment, prevention programs and further breast cancer research for Orange County women in need.

This year, we’ve introduced a new runner’s start time for the first 5K at 7:15 a.m. Other 5K run/walk times are at 7:30 a.m. and 9:45 a.m., with a one-mile fun walk at 8 a.m.

Early bird registration is available for a discounted rate of $30 and fees will go up June 30. In hopes of surpassing our fundraising goals, we are encouraging all participants to take part in the 125 Fundraising Challenge, a call-to-action for all of those who register to raise at least $125—the cost of a Komen-funded mammogram.

For more information and to register, go to http://www.komenoc.org/race.

More updates on the 2012 Komen Orange County Race for the Cure to come so stay tuned!

Art & Creativity… Painted Voices

With the support of Yardhouse CEO and President Harald Herrmann and artist creator of The Yard House Art Collection Jerome Gastaldi , the Orange County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure invited 20 breast cancer survivors,  co-survivors, breast health advocates and supporters to a one-of-a-kind workshop titled,  “Art & Creativity…Painted Voices.” At the workshop, participants were able to express their journey with breast cancer creatively through the painting of canvases. In April, the pieces were  sold in a silent auction at the 2012 Pink Tie Ball, held at Festival of Arts, Laguna Beach, in order to raise funds for the Affiliate’s mission of ending breast cancer forever.

Check out some photos from the workshop!

2012 Pink Tie Ball

On April 21, the Orange County Affiliate of Susan G.
